It provided the first\u00a0cogent\u00a0account of necessity and possibility as\u00a0metaphysical\u00a0concepts, and it distinguished both concepts from the epistemological notions of\u00a0a posteriori knowledge\u00a0and\u00a0a priori knowledge\u00a0(knowledge acquired through experience and knowledge independent of experience, respectively) and from the linguistic notions of\u00a0analytic\u00a0truth\u00a0and\u00a0synthetic\u00a0truth, or truth by virtue of\u00a0meaning\u00a0and truth by virtue of fact (<em>see<\/em>\u00a0analytic proposition).
